Background

Classic trim problem or cutting stock problem is about finding an effective combination of cutting patterns to produce the customer specified orders of rolls, sheets, bars, etc. This problem occurs in many processing industries, such as paper, film, steel, etc. Depending on different manufacturing configurations and production requirements, a trim problem appears in many flavors. For example, it may be a one-stage problem where original source items are cut into customer sizes, or it maybe a multi-stage problem where original source items are cut into smaller intermediate items, then those intermediate items can be cut further into smaller items and finally into finished products. The number of stages can be 2, 3, and even more.

The trim problem can be either purely one-dimensional where a cutting process is in one direction, or it can be one-and-half-dimensional where there is a prime cutting dimension and auxiliary cutting dimension. For example, a 60" diameter roll should be cut into smaller rolls by width and diameter.  Cutting across, or by the width direction, is called slitting, while cutting along, or by the length direction, is called chopping. Why, then, is the problem not considered as two-dimensional? It is because a waste minimization in one direction just happens to be more important than from the other direction.

Cutting is not the only process that is relevant to the trim problem. Packing, skiving, and covering are the other counterparts. Packing is a process of putting items in a container. It may have some distinct features but it can essentially be modeled in the same way as a cutting process. Skiving and covering are related to each other in the same way as cutting and packing. Skiving is the reverse process of cutting. It is literally gluing small items to get a big item. A special technological process called skiving is employed at some paper mills to produce larger rolls by width from two or more smaller rolls. Covering is a process of using predefined two-dimensional small pieces to cover big items. For example, paneling a wall with plywood boards is a covering process. Another example of a covering problem is a staff scheduling problem.
